INJECTION COMPRESSION MOULDING TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION MEETS PACKAGING EXPERTS

The premier of Coveris’ Innovation Days in southern Germany marked a great opportunity for European food and non-food manufacturers alike to meet and exchange views with packaging experts from a leading global player. With its local partner approach, Coveris is well known for providing thin wall packaging solutions in thermoforming, injection moulding, and extrusion, and over the last couple of years has devoted a considerable amount of effort towards innovation in the lightweight injection moulded technology.

“The main objective of the Innovation Days was to present to our customers the key benefits and promising potential of injection compression technology, but also to showcase other available technologies from the Group’s widespread technology portfolio”, says Michael Schorn, General Manager at Coveris Rigid Germany. Packaging manufacturer Coveris combined the prevailing consumer and packaging trends into two full days of specialist lectures delivered by Innovation, Development, and Marketing experts from Coveris, complete with a factory tour and examples of tangible packaging innovations. Moreover, the Group revealed its most recent developments and future plans in the field of innovative sustainable packaging solutions, which seek to add value by making people’s lives easier and convenient.

 

Lightweight packaging solutions by Coveris

In 2015, Coveris successfully installed the first industrial injection compression system for thin wall plastic packaging as a result of a joint developmental project with consumer goods manufacturer Unilever and mould maker Plastisud. The system features an integrated in-mould label (IML) decoration for lightweight 500g Eurotubs, and today finds application in the spreads industry.

Injection compression moulded solutions are characterised by their freedom of shape, high level of mechanical properties like robustness (top load), and safety (tamper evidence). The in-mould labels allow for large-scale decorations to be applied right up to the sealing rim, resulting in excellent branding opportunities. With regards to environmental matters, advanced injection compression technology can achieve weight reductions and savings of up to 20% of the materials used as a result of the technology’s decreased wall thickness.

Coveris’ upcoming Innovation Days will be held in France in September this year and will focus on T-IML – thermoforming in-mould labelling, a technology combination that offers a unique barrier and decoration in one package. Participants will also have the chance to see the production process in action in the Coveris Global Rigid Division’s first clean room production facilities.
